Optical Diagnostics in Herpetic Keratitis

چکیده
One of the leading global causes vision impairment due to anterior segment disease is herpes simplex keratitis (HSK). The routine clinical method in diagnosis HSK examination eye using slit lamp biomicroscopy; nevertheless, this a subjective and can potentially lead an erroneous diagnosis. Optical devices such as vivo confocal microscopy optical coherence tomography are among additional diagnostic tools that provide valuable resource management condition. In research settings, these technologies have already enhanced our understanding microscopic numerous common observations. This review aims highlight multiple emerging applications for imaging HSK.

Bilateral herpetic keratitis.
Thirty patients with bilateral herpetic keratitis were evaluated, 40% of whom were atopic. Stromal keratitis occurred in 40% of the eyes and recurrent ulceration in 68%. Four patients (5 eyes) developed secondary microbial keratitis. Visual acuity decreased to 6/60 or less because of corneal opacification in 17% of the eyes.
متن کاملSystemic immunity in herpetic keratitis.
The importance of specific immunity, especially cell-mediated, in resistance to herpes simplex disease is well documented, and animal experiments show that immune responses to previous herpetic infection can give considerable protection against reinfection in epithelial keratitis. Since susceptibility to stromal herpetic keratitis is probably determined in part by the extent of virus proliferat...
متن کاملAcyclovir (Zovirax) in herpetic disciform keratitis.
Forty patients with disciform keratitis were randomly assigned to double-blind treatment with 3% acyclovir and 0.01% betamethasone drops or acyclovir and matching placebo. All patients who received the combination healed in a median time of 21 days, while 11 of 19 patients who received acyclovir alone were withdrawn because their condition remained static or worsened (p less than 0.001). The co...
متن کاملSemaphorin 7a in Herpetic Neurotrophic Keratitis.
Recurrent infection of the ocular surface by herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1), a neurotropic herpesvirus, is a leading infectious cause of corneal blindness in developed countries. The origin of recurrent infections lies in the fact that the virus establishes latency in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglion (TG). While the latent infection of TG is marked by the loss of viral protein sy...
متن کاملHerpetic keratitis in athymic (nude) mice.
The inflammatory response to herpes simplex virus infection of the cornea was studied in athymic nude (nu/nu) and heterozygote (nu/+) BALB/c mice. Although athymic mice were highly susceptible to HSV infection and died 13 to 17 days after corneal inoculation, they failed to develop necrotizing keratitis of the cornea. Heterozygote mice survived the initial virual infection, but many of these mi...
